Tamworth hospital prepares for busy festival period

MUMBAI: Medical staff at the renowned MUMBH hospital in suburban Mumbai are waiting for a busy period from Friday to Monday when the world famous festival of Padma Vibhushan is expected to be held.However, the hospital is prepared with a plan to accommodate those who seek treatment in a day and evening or a few hours. While doctors are keen to treat everyone at their discretion, they're planning to accommodate some patients who are not physically fit and unable to perform physical exercises for 48 hours.The hospital's executive director Dr Prakash Kumar told TOI that they are having a meeting with the district health secretary and city health commissioner to plan emergency facilities for those who may be unable to return to normal activities after coming in from abroad for the week.Dr Kumar, the medical director of the MUMBH hospital, said there were three camps set up in Mumbai's suburbs to accommodate all who are unable to stay in hospital for 24 hours and to have extra support systems in place for those who are unable to make their regular scheduled activities available for 24 hours. "We are ready to accommodate those who want the operation on a standby basis only," Dr Kumar said.A team of 10-12 doctors has been constituted, including specialists in paediatrics, surgery and obstetrics, to meet the requirements of those who are unable to do other scheduled activities. Dr Kumar said the doctors were preparing their equipment and have prepared a training program, in order to help their team members with their new responsibilities."We are prepared for those who may require help to stay in hospital on a daily basis, such as children or elderly. The team is working in groups and we are monitoring and ensuring the health of the patients," he said.Dr Kumar said the medical unit was ready for an emergency. "We are keeping all emergency procedures for 24 hours under tight guard and have set up additional emergency wards for patients who are unable to go to their home on a regular basis," he said. "For those who are severely malnourished or those who are dependent on emergency treatment from abroad, we have started working on arrangements to be delivered to them," he added.

Fears farmers may be unaware of drought aid and other ways in which government officials are trying to protect livestock

In the past two weeks, more than 2,500 people have been killed or forced to flee their homes because of drought. The situation in India is dire as it has become clear that the Indian government has been deliberately reducing the amount of rain available in 2016.

In fact, India's government announced last week that it wants to cut the amount of rain available for the rest of the year by 25 percent or even more, resulting in increased losses to farmers and ranchers, a huge increase in livestock prices, and an increase in disease transmission.

Farmers are already being forced to move their cattle out of water-scarce areas, and will likely move their livestock out of areas with drought-affected rainfall as well in response to the loss of water. Farmers have been advised not to continue growing crops with higher water requirements. In response to this decision, over 120,000 farmers have abandoned their land in the past few months, the majority of them in north-east India's Maharashtra state.

The reason for this, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is that drought-affected agricultural land in India will have to be relocated:

"This means that some 1.5 billion hectares will have to be shifted to lower levels of water use such as drought-tolerant crops, or the land will be completely covered by other types of crops that could take up more water."

This is because "land that previously could have been irrigated or planted with maize, millet, sorghum and other food crops has been converted to drought-tolerant crops". In many cases, these crops include corn, rice and sorghum in India's central belt. The FAO estimates that farmers will have to remove 6.5 million hectares from dryland areas or abandon 50 percent of their farms by 2023.

While this plan sounds quite good from a humanitarian standpoint, it doesn't take into account that the losses to farmers of a drought-related catastrophe could potentially run into tens of millions of dollars.

The FAO warns that without drought relief, water-intensive agriculture may suffer, even if farmers get a free pass on increased use of water:

"In some cases, if no other sources of water are available, the loss of water will be greater than the gain of the extra rain and potentially the loss of farm animals. In some cases this could even lead to human death," the FAO says. "In additi
